What does the residence permit according to § 16b AufenthG cover?

Admission to a state-recognized university:

Secure livelihood:
Your livelihood must be secured for the duration of your studies. You can prove this with a blocked account (at least EUR 11,208 per year, amount valid for 2024), a scholarship or a declaration of commitment.

Language skills:
Language skills are required for some degree programs, usually language level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This knowledge must be proven at the German embassy or consulate.
Prospects with the study visa
The residence permit for the purpose of studying is usually issued for an initial period of two years. If you have not obtained a degree within this period, your residence permit can be extended for a further two years. During your studies, you may work up to 140 full or 280 half working days per year or up to 20 hours per week. Student part-time jobs can be pursued for an unlimited period of time.
After completing your studies in Germany
After successfully completing your studies, you can obtain a residence permit for the purpose of seeking employment in accordance with § 20 Para. 1 No. 1 Residence Act. This is granted for up to 18 months in order to find qualified employment in Germany. During this time, you may engage in any type of employment. As soon as you have found a qualified job, you can have your residence permit converted into a residence permit for skilled workers or an EU Blue Card.
Further prospects after graduation

Work permit and settlement permit:
As a graduate of a German university, you can apply for a permanent residence permit after just two years of employment (Section 18c (1) sentence 2 AufenthG).

Self-employment:
If you would like to become self-employed in Germany, you can apply for a corresponding residence permit.

Promotion:
University graduates have the opportunity to do a doctorate in Germany. There are different residence permits depending on the type and scope of your work during your doctorate.

Vocational training:
If you prefer practical training, you can complete vocational training. A residence permit is also required for this.
