Visa for completing vocational training

Overview of our services

Would you like to complete vocational training in Germany?
We will support you in taking all the necessary steps.
Germany offers excellent opportunities for qualified vocational training, whether at school or in a company, and prepares you perfectly for a career in the German working world.
In order to take advantage of this opportunity, you must meet certain requirements for the issue of a visa in accordance with § 16a AufenthG.

Requirements for the vocational training visa

1

Proof of a specific training place in Germany:

You must have a school or company-based training place in Germany.

2

Proof of language skills:

As a rule, German language skills at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) are required for qualified vocational training.
This applies if the educational institution has not already tested your language skills or if you have not completed a preparatory German course.

3

Securing a livelihood:

Your livelihood must be secured for the entire duration of your stay.
This means that you must prove that you have at least 903 euros per month (as of 2024) at your disposal.
In the case of school-based vocational training, this proof can be provided via a blocked account or a declaration of commitment.
In the case of in-company vocational training, the salary serves as proof.
If this is not sufficient, you can make up the difference by providing additional proof, such as a blocked account or a declaration of commitment.

!

Important note

The approval of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) is obtained for in-company vocational training.
This is done as part of an internal official procedure for which you do not need to take any further steps.

Prospects with the vocational training visa

The vocational training visa allows you to stay in Germany during your training and to work up to 20 hours a week in a part-time job.
If you are training in a company, you may also take part in preparatory German courses.

After successfully completing your vocational training, you have the opportunity to stay in Germany for up to 18 months in order to find qualified employment.
To do this, you must apply to the relevant immigration authority for a residence permit to look for a job in accordance with § 20 Para.
1 No. 3 AufenthG.

Graduates of an assistant or helper training course in a healthcare or nursing profession have the opportunity to obtain a residence permit to look for a job for up to 12 months, with an option to extend for a further six months.
During this time, you may take up any employment in order to secure your livelihood.
If you are successful in finding a job, you can then apply for a residence permit for qualified employment without having to leave Germany.

After two years of gainful employment in Germany, if all requirements are met, you can obtain a settlement permit in accordance with § 18c Para.
1 sentence 2 AufenthG.

Further options after completing vocational training

1

Professional development

If you would like to take on more responsibility after your training, there are various opportunities for further training in Germany.
Depending on the profession, you can specialize, advance your career or become self-employed.

2

Further training in the technical or craft sector

Technical professions, for example, offer the opportunity to train as a “state-certified technician”.
Craftsmen can acquire the title of master craftsman, which opens up management positions or gives them the opportunity to set up their own business.

3

Study

Alternatively, you can also study at a university in Germany after your apprenticeship.
Under certain conditions, this is also possible without an Abitur, for example with a master craftsman’s certificate or relevant professional experience.
